Rain again, still no play at Bourda

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC): Not a ball was bowled in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-day Tournament first-class match between Guyana and Leeward Islands yesterday.

The condition of the Bourda Oval outfield remained unplayable, after overnight rain again ravaged the ground.

Umpires Clyde Duncan, a Guyanese and Vincent Bullen, a Barbadian, again had an easy decision and chose to abandon the third day of the second round match very early.

After the ground was almost submerged last Thursday, sunshine on Friday and Saturday, along with hard work from the groundstaff, raised hopes of play late yesterday, but the inclement weather returned to render those prospects meaningless.

Keen contest

Since the construction of the National Cricket Stadium in Providence on the outskirts of the Guyana capital, international matches are no longer contested at Bourda Oval, but local authorities have tried to keep the ground in commission with regional matches.

A keen contest between the Guyanese and the Leewards was expected, since both teams are coming off first-round defeats and were looking to rebound with a win.

Guyana surrendered to Jamaica by 165 runs, after gaining first innings points in a road game at the Alpart Sports Club.

Leewards were crushed on home soil at Warner Park in St Kitts, when England Lions beat them by an innings and 120 runs
