Guyanese Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, one of the world’s leading scholars on Caribbean defense and security issues has been announced as a recipient of the 2015 William J. Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education.
Dr. Griffith will be recognized at a ceremony on December 15, 2015, at 2:30 pm at the Perry Center, Fort McNair, Washington DC.
Named after the Center’s founder, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. William J. Perry, the Perry Award is presented annually to individuals who and institutions that have made significant contributions in the fields of security and defense education. From the many nominations received, awardees are selected for achievements in promoting education, research, and knowledge-sharing in defense and security issues in the Western Hemisphere
Throughout Dr. Ivelaw Griffith’s years of service as a scholar, author, and educational leader, his teaching and innovative research have informed a generation of policymakers and practitioners and have advanced a cooperative international security environment among the nations of the Caribbean Basin. The selection committee noted Dr. Griffith’s significant and tangible work at colleges and universities across the United States as Dean, Provost, Senior Vice President, University President, and currently, Senior Fellow at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. His scholarly contributions and participation in countless international forums have been instrumental in building mutually beneficial multilateral relationships and in further increasing democratic security in the Caribbean.
Dr. Griffith’s lifelong contributions have furthered democratic security in the Americas and, in so doing, embody the highest ideals of the Center and the values embodied by the Perry Award.
