Dear Editor,
I write to bring attention to a matter of utmost importance regarding construction practices in Georgetown, Guyana, and the potential repercussions for public safety and international competitiveness.
During a recent stroll through the streets of Georgetown on November 30, 2023, my attention was drawn to a tall steel structure under construction. A closer examination revealed a concerning flaw – numerous connections between metal girders and columns lacked a significant number of bolts. Even if these missing fasteners are intended to be installed later, the implications are alarming. The stress placed on existing fasteners, flanges, and connections as construction progresses may surpass the design limits, posing a serious risk to the structural integrity of the building.
This letter is not intended to cast aspersions on the construction industry, but rather to raise awareness about the potential dangers associated with subpar construction techniques, standards, and workmanship. Whether due to inadequate skills, supervision, standards, inspection, or an attempt to save time and expenses, buildings with deficiencies may have a significantly shortened life expectancy, putting the general public at severe risk of harm or even death.
As Guyana emerges as a burgeoning hub for international workers, the issue of litigation and compensation for damages looms large. International conglomerates will undoubtedly prioritize the safety of their staff, and failure to meet acceptable standards could result in serious consequences for local businesses. To compete effectively with the international community, Guyana must uphold equal quality and standards, ensuring local businesses remain competitive for contracts with foreign counterparts.
In the interest of public safety and the continued growth of Guyana’s international standing, it is imperative that we prioritize and enforce stringent building codes and inspections. Let us work collectively to safeguard the well-being of our citizens and secure our place in the global marketplace.
Sincerely,
Ian G. Hall
