US and Israel Launch Major Strikes on Iran as Region Braces for Wider Conflict

Tehran reports explosions, Iran retaliates toward Israel, Gulf states tighten airspace amid rising tensions.

The Middle East edged closer to a broader regional war after United States President Donald Trump announced that American forces had begun “major combat operations” in Iran, following Israeli missile strikes on Iranian targets.

Israel confirmed that it had launched missile attacks against Iran. Shortly after, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had begun a first large-scale wave of retaliatory missile and drone strikes toward Israel, escalating fears of a multi-front conflict.

Explosions were reported across Iran, including multiple blasts in the capital, Tehran. Additional strikes were heard in several other locations nationwide. While there was no immediate official government statement from Tehran, Iranian state media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian was “safe and sound.”

The conflict quickly widened beyond the immediate combatants. Bahrain announced that a missile attack had targeted the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama. In Qatar, officials said a missile had been intercepted. An explosion was also reported in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. Several countries across the region shut down their airspace as a precaution, underscoring fears of a rapidly spreading confrontation.

The United States Fifth Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain, plays a central role in securing shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters. Any confirmed attack on that facility signals a significant escalation with implications for global energy markets and maritime trade.

The retaliatory strikes by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards indicate that Tehran intends to respond directly rather than rely solely on proxy forces. The scale of drone and missile launches toward Israel suggests an effort to demonstrate military capability while testing Israeli air defenses.

Regional governments are now assessing the risks of further spillover. Airspace closures across the Gulf highlight the potential for broader disruption to international travel and commercial aviation.

The latest developments follow days of mounting tension between Israel and Iran, with the United States publicly aligning itself with Israeli security objectives. Analysts warn that direct US involvement increases the stakes and raises the possibility of sustained military engagement rather than limited exchanges.

Oil markets are expected to react sharply to any confirmed disruptions in Gulf shipping or infrastructure. Investors are also watching for signals from Washington and Tehran that could indicate whether diplomatic channels remain open.

At the time of publication, there had been no comprehensive casualty reports. Governments across the region have urged citizens to remain alert as air defense systems remain active.

This is a developing story.
